Following a wait of almost five years the charity Synergy Wales has finally been able to launch its exciting cycling and multi sports project at Cwmbran Stadium. On Monday 15th October the trustees and committee members celebrated with many of their loyal supporters who enjoyed experimenting with the various cycles and sports equipment available. This includes a tandem cycle kindly donated by the St Pierre Golf Club and presented by Mr. Eric Brown, President of the club. Among other guests were Mr. Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen Council, Mrs. Angharad Collins CEO of Torfaen Leisure Trust and the Director Sian Donovan and Senior Officer Kevin Rahman-Daultrey from Pedal Power Cardiff……

Synergy has been determined to set up interesting and challenging activities for young people and adults with Learning Disabilities since its launch in December 2013. The charity came into being as a result of the cuts to social services in Newport City Council. Initially a protest group, several parents came together and having decided to take matters into their own hands, organised themselves into Synergy Wales (Cyfle Cymru). Television presenter Eddie Butler is their patron.

The years in between have been fraught with plans and disappointments but once the charity turned towards Torfaen, then its fortunes greatly improved. Torfaen Leisure Trust opened its doors to the charity and has provided much needed space and advice in moving the projects forward. Grants from Sport Wales and the Gwent Regional Partnership Board have enabled the Trustees to purchase specialist cycles and indoor sports equipment. In addition to this the grants provide for the employment of three part time individuals who have been trained in all aspects of safety and supervision of the project.

It is hoped that the Cycling and Multi Sports activities will provide stimulating and enjoyable challenges to individuals and groups of people throughout the area.
